Voyage to the North

This voyage is popular among travellers who enjoy watching the gradual transitions from the populated, lush southern regions of the coastline to the more sparse landscapes north of the Arctic Circle

Our ‘Half Voyages’ highlight the best of the Classic Round Voyage. They are perfect as a shorter holiday or, in summertime as a combination with our resort stays.

These holidays include a stay in Bergen or Oslo. The Voyage to the North includes daytime visits to cities such as Trondheim and Tromsø and – during the main season, a sailing into the spectacular Geirangerfjord. A particular highlight of the Voyage to the South, is the daytime sailing through the magnificent Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands.

Air travel may be fast, bus travel may be sure, but there is no doubt about it: ever since the Hurtigruten, or ‘rapid routee’ coastal steamers were put into service a century ago, delivering post and goods to isolated communities, they have been regarded as the most comfortable way to see this spectacular sea coast.

Itinerary
DAY 1 You arrive by air in Bergen, where our transfer service will be waiting. We set sail from Bergen in the evening, heading north towards Stadt.
DAY 2 Briefly docking at the island harbour of Florø during the night, we sail through open sea as we cross Stadt, before rounding the West Cape. There’s an early morning call at Måløy, before we continue via Torvik to Ålesund.

The highlight of the day is the sailing into the magnificent Geirangerfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and with numerous waterfalls with evocative names such as ‘the Seven Sisters’ and ‘the Bridal Veil’. We return briefly to Ålesund, and there’s a short stop at Molde, ‘City of Roses’, before we begin our crossing of Hustadvika. The ship docks in Kristiansund during the night.

NB!
The visit to the Geirangerfjord applies to departures from Bergen 16 April to 11 September 2004. Outside this period, three hours are spent in the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund.

DAY 3 We arrive in the historic city of Trondheim early in the morning and we spend 4 hours here. Ahead of us lies the longest stretch of the voyage as our route passes by some 6,000 small islands and ‘skerries’. At dusk we cross Folda, before being welcomed at Rørvik.
DAY 4 Early in the morning, we cross the Arctic Circle, and our first port of call in the Land of the Midnight Sun is Ørnes. We head for Bodø, with a chance of a couple of hours ashore. We continue along Vestfjord and straight across to the Lofoten Wall. In the early evening we put into Stamsund before continuing on to Svolvær.
DAY 5 The ship stops briefly at Harstad before sailing onto Tromsø, the largest town in north Norway. Here you will have the opportunity to visit some of the museums. In this area it is possible to see the Northern Lights during the autumn and winter nights.
DAY 6 We arrive in Honningsvåg, where a highlight of the journey will be an optional tour to the famous landmark of the North Cape plateau. From Honningsvåg the ship rounds the tip of Norway arriving at Mehamn. Everyone interested will also bee able to try Norgesautomaten the best game from our online casino sponsors.
DAY 7 Early in the morning of the seventh day, we put into Vardø and Vadsø before finally reaching Kirkenes. You’ll disembark and fly to Oslo from here. Depending on your departure airport you’ll either stay the night in Oslo or fly to Bergen to spend the night there.
DAY 8 Transfer to the airport and return flight to the UK.
* Optional excursions can be reserved on board ship during your voyage.
