Bergen

Surrounded by seven mountains, Bergen is the gateway to Norway’s magnificent fjord region. The city was founded in 1070 and is steeped in history. Visit the old Hanseatic warehouses on “Bryggen” or take a step back in time on a stroll through the steep and narrow alleyways of “old Bergen”.

The hometown of the famous composer, Edvard Grieg, Bergen is also a centre for culture, with a concert hall, theatres and art galleries and every spring the city hosts an international music festival.

Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Fish Market, visit the Aquarium, take a trip on the funicualr railway to mount Floyen where on a clear day, there are magnificent views of the city and it’s surroundings.

Bergen has many excellent restaurants and the fish restaurants here are among the best in Norway.

Oslo

The “Viking Capital” is located on the beautiful Oslofjord, overlooked by the medieval Akershus fortress. The site of Norway’s first University and its main centre for imports it has grown into a modern cosmopolitan city and despite being one of Europe’s larger cities in terms of surface area, the centre can easily be covered on foot.

If you’re interested in culture and heritage, you have many options – there are several excellent museums, among them the Viking Ship Museums, the Kon Tiki Museum and the National Gallery. At the Munch Museum, you’ll find Edvard Munch’s most famous work, “The Scream” among the vast collection exhibited here.

You can also admire the more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland during a stroll through the park of the same name.

When eating out in Oslo you’ll find a wide choice, from small cosy cafes to top class restaurants and if you enjoy shopping you are likely to find just what you’re looking for on Karl Johans gate, Oslo’s main shopping street.

Voss

Surrounded by a ring of mountains, the lakeside town of Voss is situated midway between the Sognefjord.

In summer a cable car takes you to the top of the Mount Hangur, where you’ll find a network of excellent nature trails, and spectacular views of the modern town clustered around its 13th century stone church.

Voss Folk Museum’s collection of traditional handicrafts is housed in 16 original wooden buildings, dating from 1600.

There are many excursions from Voss to explore the magnificent fjord countryside that lies within easy reach of the town. Some are escorted, others are by public transport, giving you the freedom to plan your own route.

Cultural events also take place during the summer. For those looking for more energetic pursuits there are also a number of activities such as horse riding, cycling, rafting and hang gliding.

Flåm

When tourists first came to Flåm more than a century ago they were brought down the steep valley from Myrdal by horse and carrage!

Today you take the Flåm Mountain Railway – one of the Europe’s most spectacular train journeys – to reach this picturesque village on the shores of the Aurland fjord, an arm of the famous Sognefjord. From here you can take boat trips on the fjord, go for walks, visit Otternes Farm Museum, or catch a bus to Lærdal to visit the Wild Salmon Centre.
